Subject:Trash or Treasure?
Posted By: Bruce Sat, Dec 24, 2016 IP: 2602:0306:cca2:dfb0:

Any thoughts on this pottery jar/urn? It appears to have had a lid at one time, but that's just a guess. Any help in identifying this will be greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks,

Bruce

Certainly looks old. Not sure if it's Chinese but if it is it seems to be in the style of lead glazed wares make around the six dynasties to Sui dynasty period, roughly the 3rd to 6th centuries AD. The applied roundels, particularly, make me think that it's possibly from that period, during which there was a lot of interaction/cross pollination with the West over the trade routes. Any signs of glaze iridescence or deterioration would be a good indicator of age. Also, the edges should be soft from weathering on an old piece.

I found a likely related jar catalogued by Bonham's Auction House as a Buddhist funerary jar and cover, Song to Yuan dynasties, estimated at L500-700. Your jar looks like it could be related in form and general decoration to the Bonham jar but possibly earlier in date.
