Subject:Flowers on Ming bowl
Posted By: Michael O Thu, Jul 28, 2016 IP: 203.126.109.122

I have a large (33 cm) Ming bowl which has a design of flowers in the bowl and on the sides. There is a lotus flower but I am not able to identify the rest. Can another one help?

Sean, you are of course entitled to your opinion based on these, admittedly poorly taken pictures. But you do not base your one-liner on any fact or anything you see in the pictures. So what do you see or not see to say that this is a less than 10 year old bowl? It would be very helpful and educational for everyone, myself included, if you can share your expertise. Thank you.

I understand why you might have reacted the way you did to Sean's post...his criticism seems a bit direct and sarcastic.
However, I agree with Sean's opinion...the bowl is a modern copy.
How do you I know?
Without the benefit of a time machine, these type of assessments using photos are based upon comparison of color, design, slip, paste, and overall similarity in style to known examples.

In my experience, your bowl is too rigid in design to compare to true Ming style bowls. The paste that I can see in the foot rim does not look like that of Ming period paste. The 'knife' marks on the underside of the bowl look mechanical.

Even the glossiness of the porcelain slip seems to be of modern porcelain.

I hope that even if you do not agree with my assessment that you will investigate further authenticated Ming porcelains from Museum collections. I think if you see more examples in person, you will see your bowl in the light of greater objectivity.

Hi Tim,
I am truly appreciative to you for taking time to write this post and to share your experience.

I am definitely going to take each of your points to investigate further. There is very much more for me to learn about Chinese ceramics and it is always a joy to get help from a gentleman and expert like yourself.

Thanks and have a great weekend.
