Subject:Odd ink brush painting of Lion...Please help
Posted By: JayC Fri, Feb 12, 2016 IP: 184.96.25.229

I saved this ink brush painting from certain destruction. It was packed away in a warehouse; the covering glass was filthy and broken and the piece was about to be thrown away. The glass was so dirty I originally though the cat was a tiger, the image was nearly opaqued out by the dirt...but as I now see it is a lion. I don't know who the artist is or why they would be painting a lion. Any help deciphering the signatures and stamps and any clarification on why a lion in this type of scene would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I believe it is a tiger.

I think Tigers generally have stripes...all the way to the forehead and jowls. Why would you think it's a Tiger?

yes, it is a lioness, but that's an unusual subject. the inscription seems not written by a native calligrapher, maybe 文光, 文克, or something else that has not been copied well. The one seal you posted a clear image of doesn't clarify the script; not sure what the other two read. Agree that it's rather odd. If Chinese I would think it is no earlier than the mid 1980s. It doesn't look much like the Japanese paintings of lions and tigers that were popular tourist items since the 1950s.

Thank you! I think you are probably right but, judging from the frame, I might place the painting in the 1970s. It was one of those black, anodized metal frames that people used to frame their own artwork...big in the 70s. Anyway, I have included close-ups of the stamps and signature to see if that helps clarify the name of the artist. Again, thank you!

By the way, I don't know if size helps but the actual image size is about 18" x 30".

Yes, the artist's name is 翁文光, you will find a number of works online if you search using those characters. However notice that the signature on your lioness picture is quite different from those online, and the second seal in your image above is impressed upside down, something that is virtually unheard of.

FOUND HIM!!! Thank you!!!! The artist's name is Wen Guang Weng and he is from Singapore. According to AskART he was active during the 20th century...I don't know anymore than that right now. He is well known for his tigers...but I can't find any lion, (by the way I also have a tiger by him...I figured if I found out about one I would figure out the other)...but the lion?

P.S.: This one is actually in better condition than the lion...although I found them both in the trash!!

Do you still have these beautiful paintings?

I would be interested in buying off you if that is something you could be happy to do.

Thanks,
Tom
