Subject:Characters for "Yang Tien-li"
Posted By: beadiste Tue, Feb 02, 2016 IP: 206.174.69.67

"Yang Tien-li" is noted as a cloisonne workshop or artist at the turn of the last century. The name appears in the cloisonne exhibitors list at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, also in the 1917 auction list for the collection of Alfred Owre, and in Mrs. Archibald Little's 1904 "Guide to Peking":

"PEKING CLOISONNE Yang tien li in the Yen i Hutung a lane to the right off the Hatamen Street prices are fixed and the stock in hand never very large so that it does not require many minutes to effect a purchase."

The DeXingCheng atelier was also on Hatamen Street, east of the old Legation Quarter.

But how was "Yang Tien-li" actually written in Chinese? I've tried various Google searches, and draw a blank each time. Does anyone care to make a guess?

Looks like you've already found the Yang Tianli characters yourself, but here's the link to a Chinese-language online document I found, from which I've translated the following excerpt containing a smidgen more on cloisonné exhibitors at turn-of-the-century international exhibitions.

According to historical records, only in the middle and later Qing period did cloisonné began spreading among the people. Workshops making popular Beijing cloisonné first appeared during the reign of the Qing Xianfeng to Guangxu emperors, while simultaneously the famous shop names of Lao Tianli (老天利), Yang Tianli (楊天利), Dexingcheng (德興成), etc., began making products that could not be called inferior to enamelware made for the palace. Beijing cloisonné at the USA 1904 Chicago World's Fair and the 1915 Panama World's Fair won awards at both events.

Best regards,

Bill H

Because the Forum posts so slowly, I'd already tried that by the time I was able to read your post.

Weirdly, the texts of the various posts seem to repeat and repeat, as if there was one article that was OK'd for publication, and then everyone used it.

This version seems pretty close to whatever was the original, and is interesting:

The pictures also appear in a Zhang Rong lecture - I guess they're works in the Palace Museum collection:
