Subject:China or Japan Tea Caddy (Pewter?) - Unknown Marks
Posted By: Kattareeya Fri, Dec 05, 2014 IP:

I bought this tea caddy from a flea market in Thailand.

Firstly, I was writing this message and presuming this tea caddy to be of Chinese origin. Something then crossed my mind and I did an internet search on Japanese tea caddies. I am unsure as to whether the script on the two faces of the caddy and the mark on the base is Chinese or Japanese. Can anyone help with this, please?

I have looked on google and on antique collectors and antique sellers pages alike and still I cannot identify the mark on the base.

The caddy measures:

Width: 4 inch (10.2cm)
Height: 6 inch (15.3cm)
Depth: 5.7 inch (14.6cm)

483 grams

I am unsure as to the material. Many antique China tea caddies were made from pewter and the material does resemble pewter, thus I am led to believe this is what it it most likely made from.

Any advice, knowledge and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Dear Kattchaa, Your tea caddy is made of pewter and is typically chinese.I can't unfortunately translate the text and the mark, but I can date it late 19th to early 20th century. Rémy

Tea caddies in this style typically are Chinese. The base mark on yours reads "Produced under registered mark of Yan Long" (Yan Long Ji Chu Pin - 顏隆記出品). Yan and Long both are family names, but Yan would be the surname here, because the characters are ordered left to right, in Western fashion. This configuration also indicates the piece was made in the Republic Period (1912-49) or later. Probably relevant, a Google query finds a tin fabricating company named Yan Long Ji (same characters - Cantonese: Yan Lung Kee ) currently operating in the Shatin District of Hong Kong.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thiis tea caddy is pewter made in Hong Kong, also is made by my grandfather.
顏隆記 is my grandfather's factory name. The factory more than 100 years of history.
