Subject:Japanese Signature Seal Mark KANO NAONOBU ???
Posted By: Kayla Thu, Mar 17, 2005

I have been told by RY in this forum a while back that this was the signature of KANO NAONOBU but I could not find a similar signature of this artist to compare. Is this by KANO NAONOBU or is it someone else. Any confirmations ???

I found this page and says it's Kano Naonobu.

It's Japanese but when you click the picture,
you can see bigger size pic.

I think the Naonobu that I have looks like a woodblock print. It is almost the same (not exact) as the one pictured on the Japanese website. Did he do woodblocks or just watercolors? Or is this just a modern reproduction. But it does look like an original??

Hello,
Naonobu Kano is one of my favorite Japanese painters and once I tried to find out as much as resource given reference to him. Here are some new pages, the first one is my home page the other is an Austrian site (University of Vienna)I hope it is of some help. As for your picture it seems to me it is a print (woodblock or other method) and possibly up to 2nd half of the 20th cent.

Well, there's this one here I picked up in a Google search.

Looks like a match to me.

BTW, Naonobu was a 17th painter (and member of the famous "Kano" school of painters), so I'd suspect yours is a modern reproduction.

From what I've read, Naonobu was a painter, and seeing as how he lived before multi-colored "brocade" printing was even developed, I think it's a safe bet that your woodblock is a modern reproduction.

Classic paintings have often been reproduced in woodblock by publishers like Uchida, Kyoto Hanga-in, and others. These are usually aimed towards the tourist trade.

I have an original and that is his signature seal mark.
