Subject:Junyao Glaze Flambe Plate for Opinions
Posted By: Bill H. Sat, May 21, 2011 IP: 98.71.214.56

Herewith is the first group of three photos of an approximately 8.5 inch diameter plate with junyao type purple glaze that gradates to light lavender streaks and spots in the flow. It has the obligatory 'worm tracks' on the exterior, as well as its glazed inner foot. More photos will be added when the posting appears.

Because of the glazed inner foot, my initial thought is that the piece may be of the Ming or early Qing period. However, virtually all of my experience with junyao ware is vicarious, so I'm hoping this can be a learning experience for me.

When I finish editing the photos, I also have a smaller bowl and a vase with Junyao glaze that I'll be posting for opinions.

There's a link below to an extensive discussion of junyao a couple of years ago in this forum.

Many thanks,

Bill H.

Hi Bill

Jun ware has been 'reproduced' during the 20th Century in this form.

I'll sort some information on Monday to assist with you further in your research!

Best,

Gary.

It certainly did behave like a junyao glaze in the kiln.

I have not seen an "old" (Song/Yuan) plate on very low foot, nor any item with glaze within the footrim. What would be the point of adding this glaze?

Since junyao is being made today, I think it difficult to particularly date such a piece to Ming or Qing times.

There have been studio potters experimenting with old glaze recipes since at least the 1940s.

I do not have answers, only questions.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Gary & Cal,

Thanks to both of you for the input. I'm not up-to-date on modern efforts to reproduce ancient style junyao wares, although I've seen presumed Shiwan products with glazes that look pretty close. Anyone know where the copies are being made?

I also have this small (appx 4.5 in. dia.), unmarked censer with underglaze molded dragon around the body. It may be Japanese, because in addition to its tripodal form, the vibrant glaze looks like something inspired by Makuzu Kozan. I've always considered it probably to be early 20th century but haven't made up my mind about how early.

Much obliged,

Bill H.

Did not mean to suggest that contemporary junyao is copies of Song/Yuan types. Many modern forms, some figurines, experiments with bright glaze colors. Like your censer is not copy of anything old.

True some Shiwan products have multi-color splashed glazed look but not furnace-transmutation colors. Here is section of one such, glaze has unctuous look, not high-gloss, this one no 'worm tracks'.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Bill

Have no images to show but have some further information for you.

I think it's a Peoples Republic piece probably dating to the 1960's it may have been produced by the 'Yu County, Jun Porcelain First Factory'

Hope this helps!

Gary.

Gary, you and Cal both have been most helpful. Just one clarification: I presume you mean that the plate and not the censer may be by the 'Yu County, Jun Porcelain First Factory'.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill

Yes! I was referring just to the dish / plate.

Best,

Gary.

Jun ware from the Song dynasty did have earthworm tracks and the newer copies do not, they never could figure out how to get the tracks in the new stuff

I'm much obliged for the information. The piece with worm tracks belonged to a dealer friend of mine who later sent it off to auction and said he'd did well, though I've forgotten exactly how well.

Best regards,

Bill
