I have been told this plate is Imari and 19th century Japanese it is 21 cm diameter and 2.5 cm high I am hopeing someone can translate the markings to the back of the plate and tell me how old it is other than it is 19th century thankyou in advance

John, your Japanese dish has an apocryphal mark of the Chinese Ming Dynasty Chenghua Emperor, read in Japan as 'Dai Ming Seika Nen Sei' (Made in the Chenghua Reign of the Great Ming Dynasty). The decoration looks to me like it may be 19th century, perhaps late Edo period (before 1868), but almost everyone knows Japanese dishes better than I do.

Hi John and Bill H,

The presence of spurmarks on smaller (Japanese)items often indicates a dating before 1800. I think that also the colors makes a 18th. century dating possible.

The marking on the plate can be read, Tai-Min-Seika-nen-sei in Japanese. It was meant to be Dai-Min-Seika-nen-sei. It is simply a mistake by the painters of the Imari plate when he tried to copy the Chinese mark.
