Subject:Republic Period baluster vase - seal and inscription
Posted By: Wed, Oct 21, 2009 IP: 91.181.243.57

I was wondering if you all could chip in on what you thought was the quality of this vase is. I also wondered about the seal mark and the inscription. I am in Belgium and it comes from a collection at an old noble house and I thought is was very good enameling for the period. There are several different birds painted on the vase all around. The pictures unfortunately do not really do the enamelling justice, particularly in the light of the harsh flash. But I have really no experience with polychromes. I will post the inscription and seal in a follow up message. Thank you.

Here are the seal and inscription. The vase is largish, about 18 inches tall and I am aware of where it has been/come from in provenance over the last 40 to 50 years only. Red wax collection seal has been removed.
Thanks.

Mark says 'made at Jingdezhen', with that puce-pink, slightly muddy yellow and thick enamels could have been made as early as 1930s. Poem and red 'seals' looks transfer-printed on, notice perfect uniformity black color, no sign brush strokes.

Not bad work for mass-made factory product. Could have had sticker saying country made if exported. Enjoy as decorative item.

Good luck,
Cal
