Posted By: Wed, Oct 07, 2009 IP: 68.153.102.82 Please help me to identify, date, and value this vase that belonged to my grandmother. I have had the vase for over 50 years and have never been able to find another like it. Thank you |

Posted By: Thu, Oct 08, 2009 IP: 74.178.200.149 This is a Japanese Kyoto vase of Satsuma-type stoneware with a motif of classical figures dressed in costumes and depicted on backgrounds that have been highly decorated with Moriage-style slip painting. The red kanji marking shown appears to be only a quality control number from the kiln, probably the number 12, unless the calligrapher was lefthanded, in which case it may be 20 (just kidding about the '20' part). I'd guesstimate it to date to the late Meiji period, circa 1900 or slightly later. |
