Subject:lamp, vase and lithographies
Posted By: Tue, Oct 06, 2009 IP: 81.247.35.164

My parents inherited from my deceased grandma a few objects which unfortunately we don't have much information about. All that we know is that they have been around her house for as long as we know (which means at the least 50 years) and that they might have been brought to her by a friend who used to travel to Asia quite often back then (but again they might be of a different origin). Pictures are attached.
a)a lamp
b)a vase ("if anything is of a certain value, this would be it" grandma once said to dad back then - I found what I guess is a signature on the bottom of it, it appears on the low right corner of the picture)
c)prints or lithographies (or ink paintings ?) ; only one of them shown here
Higher definitions pictures can be provided if needed.

Any information about the origin and the estimated value of these objects (or any tip that could guide us to a place/website that could do this for free or for a small fee) would be welcome so we don't make any stupid mistake when selling them (or worse, giving them away for free to someone outside the family).

In advance, thanks for your help.
David VE. Belgium.

David,

The lithopraph is a 'kuchi-e' or a woodblock-printed frontispiece illustration, produced for publication in Japanese novels and literary magazines at the start of the 20th century in Japan. Unfortunately, your print seems to be in a rather bad condition.
Read also the article at the link below.

Dear Guy,

Thanks so much for your answer. The prints are in average condition i guess (they were exposed in an open room for probably more than 60 years), this might be the worst of them all fortunately.
Any idea if there's a market for those (ebay?) ?

Do you have any idea where I could find more infor about the vase and the lamp (any other forum where it'd more relevant)? Sorry to ask these many questions but I'm new to this...

Regards,
David

David,

In general, the market value for 'kuchi-e', even in good condition, is quite modest.

My knowledge is limited to Japanese prints and paintings.

Regards,
Guy.
