Subject:Meiji bronze Elephant with photo
Posted By: Thu, Oct 01, 2009 IP: 24.90.215.66

There is a mark that looks exactly like the Seika Saku Kanji

The Kanji photo is one I found here on this forum.

It is identical to the one on my elephant.

Any thought on this particular piece is appreciated.

Jason,

As you already mentioned in your previous message, the seal reads in this case "Seiya saku" (made in the Seiya workshop), ca. the 1890s.

A bronze group of an elephant and two tigers, Meiji period, signed "Seiya" 34 cm height (13-3/8 in.) was sold Sotheby's, London, UK; Colonnade sale "Pagoda" 2d February 1993. One tusk chipped. No photo in catalogue.

Bear in mind that many can be made once mold is created.

Good luck,
Cal
