Posted By: Fri, Oct 02, 2009 IP: 98.71.217.253 Dan, your chair looks to be Burmese, probably late 19th century British colonial period. Burma, called Myanmar by its unelected regime, was treated as the easternmost province of India before being granted independence outside the commonwealth by Britain in 1948. The decorative details that I can distinguish in the photos include a pair of celestial half-human, half-bird kinnari on the front posts and in the bottom photo a pair of creatures with entwined tails that may be river dragons called makara or their cousins the naga. Perhaps with these terms you can locate additional information on the internet. |

I was able to clean it up and I oiled it with teak oil. It will soak in and not look as wet in a few days. I have a friend who is a chair caning instructor. She said she has done rattan cane work and she's going to tackle this. I will show you all when it's finished. |
