Subject:Japanese Woodblock Print - Can u identify the artist, date, etc...
Posted By: Wed, Aug 12, 2009 IP: 75.121.214.239

Hello, I have a woodblock print (assuming it's a reproduction). Can any of you identify the original artist and/or what the three seals say?

Also, is there any value to this print? Thanks

It's a design by the great Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) - print title "Ryogoku yusuzumi" (Evening cool at Ryogoku) from and untitled series of views of places in Edo, from around 1800-1805, sealed "Gakyojin" which means "The man mad about painting".
Your print is probably a 20th century reproduction. To give you an idea...an original print in good condition was sold at Christie's for $32.200 in 1998.

Guy.

I have a pair of woodblock print but I don't know if it is reproduction or valuable. How can I tell - pictures attached. They are about 1 ft wide by about 2-1/2 ft tall.

The format you state is fairly unusual. We will need pictures to help. Note your pictures can only be a max of 100k in size.you'll need to process them before posting.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan,
Thanks for the response. How can I get the size down to 100K? I have the usual Microsoft apps. Thanks.

I use IrfraView (shareware). Or Send it to me and I'll post it.
