Subject:Miniature Figural Vase with Wang Dafan Mark
Posted By: Bill H Sat, Jun 20, 2009 IP: 74.178.243.26

Best I can tell, the inscription and accompanying seal on this small (about 4.5-inch) vase purport it to have been painted by the famous Chinese artist Wang Dafan (1888-1961), a co-founder of the Eight Friends of Zhushan (Zhushan Bayou). The more I stare at the writing, seal and four-character overglaze red mark on the bottom, the more brain-dead I believe I'm getting. My first impression is that this might be something out of a modern Jingdezhen giftshop set. However, any and all opinions on the issue of authenticity and what the inscription and mark reveal about the piece would be most appreciated, both by me and the friend for whom I agreed to take a look.
Thanks,
Bill H.

I'm posting two other images which further convince me that this small vase probably isn't an authentic Wang Dafan work. First is an extreme close-up of its subject's face, showing a rough-around-the-edges painting style. Second is a detail from a snuff bottle sold last month by Bonhams in Hong Kong, which I think demonstrates why Wang's smoothly blended colors and fine modeling earned him kudos as a master of the fencai palette. All opinions and comments are still appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill H.
