Subject:I.D. Ming's Dynasty Ru Ware Vase Real or Fake?
Posted By: Dottie Moore Tue, Apr 07, 2009 IP: 76.200.157.112

I have a vase I believe to be Ru Ware. It has been damaged and put back together. Has a stamp on bottom. Weighs around 12 pounds 16" height. I would like to ID it and know it's value. Any information appreciated.

The mark is associated with the Song dynasty. Ru ware is not this color with a base that is very different. Unfortunately your vase is most likely a modern decorative interpretation.

Ruyao not made during Ming.

Your vase probably stoneware, with stained-crackle glaze and incised mark on glazed base.

Ruyao many thin layers glaze on very thin dark ware, glaze color grayish blue sometimes greenish. Very finely crafted. Ru kilns also made other wares, but not like your piece.

Yours not 'fake' of Ruyao, nothing like it. Possibly modern 'studio pottery'.

Good luck,
Cal

Hi Dottie,
you say, "I have a vase I believe to be Ru Ware." & I wonder what lead you to believe this to be the case?
Anyhow as you`ve learned from previous posters this isn`t the case & your vase is more likely a modern studio piece.

All the best,
Phil.

Dear can anyone identify possible Ru ware from the song dynasty, I have 5 pieces altogether and the images uploaded are of a dish type vessel with a duck eggshell colour with kilns dot markings on top and underneath the dish as it could be a possibility it was made in one of 3 kilns 1)Ru Ware, 2)Ge Ware 3)Juan Ware any information would be grateful please see images

Tony, please contact me directly via my email, as Ru ware is an extremely complex subject due to its extraordinary rarity. The fact is, it would be exceptionally rare for you to have 1 authentic ru ware piece, let alone 5. So, do not get your hopes up. However, the fact is, every once is a while an authentic piece is found, therefore it is always worth taking a potential find seriously. Look forward to talking about this more closely, Greg.

sorry, but this looks new/very recent and is unrelated to Ru, Ge, or Jun wares. This should be clear from a cursory look online at surviving examples of each type.

sorry Rat should of sent you the reply from Christies auction house see below
Dear Tony,
Many thanks for contacting us with regards to your dishes. They appear to be in the style of Jun ware, however, from the photos provided, we believe them to be later re-productions, and so sadly not suited for sale here with us at Christies. Given our commission structure and the expenses you would incur by selling at Christie's (insurance, illustration and any applicable shipping and packing charges), it would not be in your best interest to consign your property through Christie’s. They are very decorative, attractive items, and so I would recommend taking them to a local auction house or dealer if you are still keen to sell at this time.
Regretting that I cannot be of further assistance to you, many thanks again for getting in touch. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with any further queries and I will be delighted to help.
Kind regards,
Alice Kiltie Chinese Ceramics & Works of Art Department
