Jade found in Jade Cove area is really good stuff, it's high grade serpintine.

Hi, Dave E:

I found both the title and content of your posting very interesting and yet puzzling.

The Big Sur jade I know is genuine nephrite jade. I have not heard of any collectors using the term for serpentine jade found there.

For two examples of nice Big Sur jades, please refer to:

http://www.bernsteinjadeart.com/3468.html

Although serpentine jades are found in Jade Cove but I believe the good stuff would be nephrite jades found there and not the serpentine jades.

What exactly is "high grade serpintine" (serpentine) in regard to their MOH hardness and specific gravity?

Do you speak out of real experience from "jade" hunting there or from your collecting experience of Big Sur jades? Had you tested any of the jade samples you may have? Would you please post pictures of some of your samples here?

For more info about Big Sur jade and jade hunting in Jade Cove, please go to this link:

Thank you.

Bill

bigsur "jade" is nephrite. i tested the hardness and gravity, far away from real nephrite stone.

Yes, not very impressed with those links from Bernstein. It's all fractured and looks very low quality, I bet both will scratch with a steel knife. Quality nephrite jade comes from Canada, like polar jade I suppose. I have many pieces from the Monterey area but doesn't compare to quality stuff elsewhere.

Anyone can have a jade collection that is lacking in high quality pieces from certain localities. It proves nothing as to the quality of jade available from said localities. Sorry your collection is LACKING in good Ocean Jades from one of the most famous jade deposits known in the US. 2 years ago I watched an high quality piece of Big Sur nephrite sell for $10,000. It is now being sold, bit by bit, carved as blue nephrite pendants!!

This nephrite jade is quite famous here in California! I have seen boulders of it that must have weighed nearly thousands of pounds, as well as having seen extraordinary carvings done from the material. It is not serpentine! On the other hand, serpentine is the State Stone of Californiaand we have plenty of that mineral around too. The Old Mint in San Francisco is built on a huge outcropping of serpentine!

I would be more inclined to call our nephrite "Monterey jade." There must be many articles that discuss how the boulders are discovered and reclaimed via scuba-diving off the coast.

Does anyone know the name or how to contact the guy in Monterey area that does the incredible jade carvings. I think he is a local surfer that makes a living using the jade from Jade Cove.
