Hi -

Attached are two photos of a chair that I am curious about. I did some reading on wood types, and I am thinking this is a soft pine?? So, nothing exotic. However, I wanted to check with a knowledgeable community. Also, I have an old ginger jar?? How would I date that?

Nice chair. I think that's elm or "Yu mu". It's used a lot in Chinese furniture. I've added another picture of an elm table for comparison.

As far as your ginger gar is concerned. You could always post some photos on the site. You'd need at least a view of the whole thing and the base. The base can give you some clues but it can be sort of a specialist field as there are so many fakes out there ranging from the terrible to the almost impossible to distinguish so it can take an expert eye to tell them apart.

You can also look for signs of wear and use (scuffing, stains, dirt, smell of ginger from the inside, etc.). Of course these can be faked but it's a good start.

Thats Elm (new elm - not reclaimed elm). The grains been dug out with a wire brush and then black stain powder rubbed into the gaps to enhance the grain pattern. You can have a look at the attached link if you want some other examples.
