Subject:Curious Stone Shishi / guardian lion Japanese inscription 1-9-1-5?
Posted By: Suzume Sat, Feb 20, 2021 IP: 2a01:cb05:8886:f400:

Hello

I recently came by this old stone shishi / Guardian Lion statue. I bought it in Japan which is why I call it Japanese.

I think it's made out of some sort of polished marble but I don't know much more than that.

Underneath is some painted text. I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to help me with it?

I can see the numbers 一 九 一 五 but I have no idea just what they mean in this case. I don't think that they can be a date given that that's not how the Japanese write their dates.

Any thoughts and opinions would be welcomed.

It is definitely Chinese,
一九五一 - 1951
(The Chinese after 1949 started to use the Western style dating)
贈 - Presented by
楊呉屈 - Yáng Wúqū (Chinese surname and given name)

With regards,

Hi,

Many thanks for your replies. I just realized that I messed up the order of the numbers in my post. Thanks for catching me on that one.

I'm guessing that it might have been given to a Japanese person at some point? Perhaps by Yáng Wúqū? I suppose there's no way of knowing for sure.

Thanks for your assistance.
