Subject:Bronze Buddha - Help to date and Help with signatures
Posted By: Arun Tue, Feb 16, 2021 IP: 47.205.112.115

I bought this and got it in the mail today. It is very heavy making me conclude it may be solid inside. Would like to know approximate age and signature. Thanks as always. Regards.

Hi Arun,

It says 'Da Ming Xuan De' 大明宣德 ('Great Ming Xuande' Emperor period [1399–1435]). A popular mark on a ton of bronze pieces, some genuine, some Qing dynasty... most modern. This Guanyin is modern but I really like it - the quality is much nicer than a lot of Xuande marked pieces I have seen. Would look great in my library!

Thanks Dan D. The Buddha does look quite elegant.
Do you think it is worth anything?

Hi Arun,

If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it? You don't need to share but if you purchased it as a modern piece I am sure you paid a fair market value price for it. Like I said, the quality is higher than normal (aka it took some skill & time) for most modern pieces and if you got it from a decor store/site and not an antique seller, selling it as "mark & period Ming Xuande bronze" then the price you got for it was fair I'm sure. Also I believe it's brass with a bronze patina finish.
