Subject:Please help with Woodblock translation
Posted By: Stephen Harris Fri, Feb 05, 2021 IP: 2603:6080:a300:ed00:

Hello, I have a woodblock on silk and mounted to a rice paper backing. It has calligraphy and 2 seals. Can you tell me anything about what it says? Thank you!

大和畫和翁圖 - Yamato-e painted by Waō
Upper seal,
菱 - Hishi
Lower seal is not clear enough to read.

Hishikawa Waō 菱川和翁 (Year of birth and death unknown)
Ukiyo-e painter in early Edo period. His original surname was Kuwahara. Was a disciple of Hishikawa Moronobu. He was banished from Edo in 1691, his subsequent life is unknown.

This is a recent reprint.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you, I. Nagy! You are most helpful. I knew it was not old, but didn't realize it was a reprint of an older woodblock. Thanks again for your help! Steve
