Subject:Gilt splash bronze birds
Posted By: Mike Tue, Feb 02, 2021 IP: 73.74.68.153

First, let me say the amount of knowledge here and the experts wiling to share it is spectacular.
The reason for my post is a couple of gilded bronze birds. My family has been collecting for several generations and I've taken on the task of researching numerous items. Any information would be sincerely appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time.
Mike

Hi,

Those are interesting. It's hard to tell from the photos but it looks like they have large rectangular holes in their backs? If so, then they're probably for incense.

They also look like they're bronze? Again, it's easier to have them in hand to tell for sure but if they're cold to the touch and not magnetic then they're probably bronze.

The gilt looks to have been brushed on.

As for dating/provenance, harder to say. I'd say probably Chinese? Probably 20th century? But that's more of a guess.

Hope this helps.

Hi John,
Thank you for the reply. They are definitely bronze . The cut outs are as if they were to hold something in place. Similar to book ends but enclosing something. Not for incense. Surface is a little rough for lack of a better word. Dark brown patina areas in the vertical corners where the cut outs are and everything is sealed. I’m lost and very appreciative for your response. If better more detailed pictures would help, I would be happy to post more.
Thanks again,
Mike
