Subject:Lrg Japanese Charger - Samurai Painting | Poem | Artist & Color Palette
Posted By: Cher Sun, Jan 24, 2021 IP: 71.244.152.73

Hello Everyone,
I have a large Japanese porcelain charger, likely Meiji period, with a beautiful painting of a Samurai with what I suspect is a poem in Japanese script. The artists signature is in the lower left-hand corner of the charger (in 2nd pic) and is signed in what I believe is Kanji script on back (3rd pic). I have been an amateur collector of Japanese porcelain for a few years. I am not familiar with this unusual color palette or where in Japan this may have been made. Thank you for help with the artist, the period, the color palette and any insights on the poem. -Cher

Reading and translation of the "tanka" (Japanese short poem) by Taira no Tadanori (1144-1184)

ゆきくれて木の下蔭を屋ど
とせば花や今宵の主ならまし
平忠度

Yukikurete ki no shitakage wo yado
to seba hana ya koyoi no aruji naramashi

Had not reached the destination before dark,
Let me stay under this tree,
Blossoms will host me as the main guest for tonight
Taira no Tadayori

Bottom marking,
大日本丸三造 - Dainihon Marusan-zō - Greater Japan Marusan Made
The "Greater japan" designation undoubtely refers to the Meiji era, however, I can't find porcelain maker with this name. Other possible explanation could be a sloppy slip of brush by the painter, who wanted to write; 九谷造 - Kuani-zō - Kutani Made.
Perhaps, others will have a different take on it.

With regards,
I.Nagy

The bottom marking is as I.Nagy already wrote: 大日本丸三造 - Dainihon Marusan-zō.
Marusan is correct in my opinion, I've found another mark with the name Marusan on a Yokohama Kutani porcelain item which was dated late Meiji, see picture.
Regards,
Martin.
