Subject:Chinese Vase - Approximate Age ????
Posted By: Peter Fri, Nov 20, 2020 IP: 91.141.2.239

Hello,

I've recently acquired a chinese vase and would be grateful to learn as to approximately how old it is. I assumed it to be late C19th/early C20th, but am not really sure. Any help from the experts will be much appreciated !!

Peter.

A variety of Chinese vases in this same bird & flower motif and palette began proliferating in the USA marketplace earlier in the present century, and appear to have become well enough recognized as fakes to drive many bidders away and sale prices down considerably. While there may be older prototypes out there for such copies, I would opine yours to be one of the repros and likely no older than the late 20th or 21st century. I've encountered instances of blue & white Chinese vases in this same antique-style form being passed up by bidders in live sales by an auction house with China roots. Inasmuch as the Chinese antique market is now driven largely by Chinese bidders, indications of shyness like this look to me to be part of the evidence that such lots are recognized as modern repros. See links below for a sampling of auction results from recent years.

Thank you most sincerely MR Bill H ! I am most grateful for your valued information, despite the news not being as I had hoped.
I have immediatley cancelled my reservation on the vase, which I was hoping to purchase tomorrow. As well as broadening my limited knowledge in this field, you have also saved myself (and probably many others) the disappointment of a regretable purchase.

Regards,Peter.
