Subject:Beautiful ginger jar - can't determine if Chinese or Japanese
Posted By: Caren Lawrence Wed, Nov 11, 2020 IP: 76.199.237.122

I was wondering if anyone would be able to help me identify the maker's mark on this beautiful ginger jar. Is this Chinese script? Japanese? Or if not, is there a website you can recommend that can help with identification. Thank you very much for your time and trouble.

The mark is displayed upside down.
It reads: Kutani 九谷 Shoei 彰栄.
Date: 3rd quarter of the 20th century.
I could not find more info about Shoei (Sho-ei),
it was probably a small studio.
Regards,
Martin.

Thank you so much. You are very kind to offer your expertise. Is the date in the characters also? Many thanks.

I believe the jar is Japanese and probably an example of contemporary Kutani transfer ware. If I'm correct, then the mark possibly reads down and across from the top right as 九谷彰庄, or 'Kutani Ornamentation Shop'. However, my record against these Japanese marks, which I approach in the context of my Chinese studies, is not exactly distinguished.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you for your response. It's incredibly helpful just to distinguish Japanese vs Chinese. Knowing it's Kutani is icing on the cake. Thank you again. Caren
