Subject:Kangxi Mark - Famille verte jars - Any possibility of being M&P ?
Posted By: MB Wed, Nov 11, 2020 IP: 2804:14c:36:8d46:292

Hello everyone,

Any possibility of this pair of jars being from the Kangxi period? My guess is early 20th century, but i need a second opinion.

Best,

MB

Your jars look fairly contemporary to me, among other reasons because the iron red style of enamel looks like it was sprayed on with an air brush, and the nontraditional lion finials more likely than not would have had the form of lotus buds in Kangxi times. There's also enough similarity between the patterns on these two jars to surmise the use of transfer decoration, which wasn't employed in this manner on a commercial basis until the early 20th century.

I've encountered no Kangxi six-character stamped marks like this from Hong Kong or Macao ornamentation shops, although Macao has made some transfer porcelains with stamped four-character Kangxi marks and others with six-character Qing marks of the Tongzhi period in a character style remarkably close to what is seen here.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Dear Bill,

Thank you so much for the help!
I agree with your considerations.
The transfer decoration is clear... even to my untrained eye. I'm getting better with your help.

All the best,

MB
