Subject:Need help with an unusual mark on a plate
Posted By: sylvia Sun, Oct 25, 2020 IP: 97.125.254.58

I have a plate that has an unusual mark that I haven't seen before. I would like to know what it says, who made it and what period is, please. Thank you!

Your mark reads: Yukitake 雪竹 (from right to left). It's a mark of Jinjo (仁蔵 ) Yukitake (1856-1923). Your plate dates around 1900.

Yukitake started with pottery at a young age and made it finally as manager of the Yokohama branch of Fukagawa's Koransha (Arita). At the end of the 19th century he became independent and started his own store in Yokohama in 2-chome, Hinodecho. In 1903 he expanded his business with import and export commissions and in 1904 he established a branch in Nagoya. He closed his Yokohama store and opened a new store in Nagasaki.

The Yago Ni logo above the Yukitake name could mean his housenumber 2 in Yokohama or the 2 stores he owned.
