Subject:Infos on possible chinese bronze
Posted By: Marcelo Macedo Sat, Oct 24, 2020 IP: 177.179.242.101

Hi there. New here on Forum, and i'm searching for some infos if possible.
I bought a bronze statue on line and have no informations about it.
It seems to be a Kuan Yin image, and i presume its chinese.
By the inscriptions on it, someone can tell?
Any info will be welcome.
Thanks a lot.

It is Chinese,
大足石刻 - Dazu Rock Carving
如意珠観音 - Ruyi Pearl Guanyin (Avalokitesvara with beaded hands)
Maker's mark,
崖□徳章 - Stamp of Ya□de (Workshop mark ?)
(The second character is illegible)

The original of this bronze Guanyin is carved into the rock in Beishan (Dazu rock carving site, 1.5 hrs drive NW of Chongqing - World Cultural Heritage site with 75 grottoes and more than 50000
stone staues)

I think it's a relatively modern souvenir item.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Inscriptions on plinth,
如意珠観音 - Ruyi Pearl Guanyin
佛光普照萬事如意 - The Buddha light illuminating all - may your hopes be fulfilled

The resume of the long redundant style inscription on the back;

This statue was made according to the Guanying statue found carved in the rock in the No. 136 Grotto of Dazu in Sichuan Province. The original stone Guanyin statue was made during the Southern Song Dynasty between 1142-1146.

However,it says nothing about when this bronze statue was made.

I.Nagy

The poor thing has been 'cleaned' within an inch of its life.

What a tragedy.

Years and years of patina destroyed to result in something that looks like it was made yesterday.

What else was lost?
