Subject:Help with old Japanese silver card case? compact? Hsignature

Hi,

I have this old box. It's marked silver and patented but I'm unsure about its purpose. There's a mirror inside but it's quite thin, perhaps too much to have makeup in it.

Any insight would be welcome, including the signature.

I was able to make out "yama".
