Subject:Help with marks on antique ivory brushpot
Posted By: Brett Fri, Oct 16, 2020 IP: 69.117.76.135

My aunt showed me this item. Am I right that it is a brush pot? There is a hole on both sides. It looks old to me based on the staple repair and coloring. 1800's? Is this Chinese or Japanese? There is writing within the scroll. I assume it poem or proverb, but I was wondering if someone could translate. Thanks for any help.

Hi Brett,
Yes your right. It's a chinese bitong (brush pot).
It's genuine elephant ivory and dates to the late 19th century, early 20th century.
Nice example.
