新山造 - Shinzan-zō - Made by Shinzan

Gold painted, Rakan picture Satsuma-like vases from the 1920s.

Dear Sir,

Why are you saying Satsuma-like? Can you explain?

Dear Elena,
Satsuma is a collective name of these mass produced "glitzy" ceramics, whose exact place of production is not always known (Kyōto, Yokohama, Tōkyō etc.)
There are no Shimazu crests (circle woith cross) or Satsuma markings on your vases - it may mean nothing, but so far, I was not been able to find any specific information about this "Shinzan" marking. There are a few sites on the net selling the very same Moriage (raised coloring) vases. One thing is sure that they were not made in Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture).

With regards,
I.Nagy
