Subject:Chinese bottle with two phoenix?
Posted By: Giuseppe Sat, Oct 10, 2020 IP: 85.226.33.113

Dear friends I would like to ask once again for your help with this bottle which I think is Chinese. It has two phoenixes on both sides and has no mark. What use could it have? What period does it belong to?
Thanks
Giuseppe

I can't recall ever seeing a vase exactly like this one, though it is stylistically Chinese and an example of fairly basic transfer decoration with added polychrome enamels. Transfer technology was not adopted in China until the early 20th century, and the vase probably was made between then and the decade of the 1950s, in my opinion.

I've attached a similar decorative scene from a hand-painted 19th century vase for a look at how expert brushwork compares to transfer decoration.

Best regards,

Bill H

Thank you Bill. You are always very helpful. In fact, the shape of the bottle intrigued me a lot. I have done a lot of research and have not found one like it. If it wasn't for the decoration I would have said it could be of European origin.

In my opinion your vase is a product of the PROC. So 2nd half of the 20th century.

Thanks Mark.
Do you have any idea on the use of the bottle. It looks like snuff bottles but in a larger size. Having two phoenixes I think it might be something for women. I also post some photos taken with a USB microscope.
