Subject:Large carved wood figural group

It has been suggested to me that this carved figural group is Japanese? Two emaciated figures, the guy at the front is holding a coin in his hand, and the figure at the back has an interesting hair knot. It's about 65cm high.
Would be most grateful for anyone else's thoughts. I can post more images if required. Thanks you
