Subject:Seal ukiyo-e painting Toyomasa
Posted By: Guy Wed, Aug 26, 2020 IP: 178.116.91.120

I have difficulties with the reading of the second seal on an ukiyo-e painting by Gekkaen Toyomasa (月下園豊政, active 1820s-30s).

The first seal reads 意 (i).

Thanks for your help.

Guy.

I read the second character;
斎 - Sai
意斎 - Isai - Looks like a pseudonym, however,
we don't know too much ab out Toyomasa.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thanks. Must be a variant seal script of the 斎/齋 character indeed with the double seal reading 'Isai'(意斎). I add a screenprint of the outcome on the Chinese Etymology site.

Not much is known about Gekkaen Toyomasa. He was probably active in Edo and is sometimes confused with the Mito artist Seifu Toyomasa (水府豊政). Another scroll with a similar setting, a courtesan and her kamuro, is also signed 'Toyomasa sha' and sealed there 月下園 and 豊政.

Guy.
