Hi,

Nice netsuke. It depicts a Noh mask carver. Quite a common subject.

This would typically be considered a "tourist piece" in so far as it was never really used by the Japanese and was made for Westerners visiting the country when Japanese art was really trendy.

It probably dates back to the end of the 19th-early 20th century. So yes, a genuine antique.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

I'd put it a little later. The decoration around the holes (himotoshi) is a 20th-century thing. Say 1930ish.

Cheers,
Stan
