Subject:Artist name & Translation Please
Posted By: Claire Rhyne Thu, Aug 06, 2020 IP: 2605:6000:1711:c40b:

Hi, I need help with artist name and translation.

This art is composed of torn layered mulched paper. It came enclosed with the following paper, which needs translation as well.

Is this a Chinese art equivalent to department store art?

Thanks in Advance. Claire

This is a washi (Japanese paper) collage depicting the famous "tsukubai" or washbasin at the entrance of the Ryōanji Temple in Kyōto, donated by Tokugawa Mitsukuni. The characters written on its surface with the conbination 口 kuchi - the rectangular opening in the center - gives the following sentence.

吾唯知足 - Ware tada taru wo shiru - I am content with what I am (have)

Inscription on the paper bag.
つくばい - Tsukubai - Washbasin

Signature,
秀声 - Shusei
Seal,
嵐 - Arashi

Arashino Shusei 嵐野秀声
Collage artist from Kyoto. I can't find relevant biographical data. Probably 1960-70s.

With regards,
I.Nagy
