I have inherited a couple of paintings from my Great Aunt and wonder if anyone could help me with any information about these pictures.
Thanks

Thanks for your reply
They are painted on a very smooth paper but were in a glass frame. Is there anything else you could tell me about them please, age etc....?
Amanda

I have a couple of these, some date back as far as pre WW1 - they were made for Western consumption and are painted in black and gold urushi (lacquer) on paper.
As a "type", they have pretty much fallen through the cracks - unless there's been some recent scholarship on their production, very little is to be found of their history.
Perhaps another poster can add more information?
