Subject:Miniature Carving
Posted By: Ellen Melton Sun, Jul 26, 2020 IP: 75.91.152.249

Would someone with expertise have information on the miniature carving I purchased from an estate sale? It is of a chubby child-like
figure in the process of removing a Noh mask. The mask is a separate carved piece which fits with a stem into the child's upraised hand. This little carving is approx. 3-1/2 inches in height and is quite heavy for its size. Any assistance is appreciated!

Hi Ellen,
Your delightful carving is elephant ivory. It's Japanese and probably dates to the later part of the Meiji period 1868-1912 or perhaps early taisho period 1912-1926.

Oh, thank you very much! We actually did not buy this intentionally, but it was included with furniture that we purchased along wilth several sealed boxes of lamps and decor. I am not a collector of Asian Art of this kind and know really very little. I have three other Netsuke pieces of a different style purchased about a year ago from another sale (of which I am fond of attending). I may also post photos of those on this board for input.
