Subject:Cleaning Pottery

I have a question about cleaning.
If you have a Han Dynasty pottery piece, should you clean the mud from it or leave it alone ?
I believe most people will say leave it, yet when I look at auctions that sell Han pottery pieces, they are usually mud free.
