Subject:Identification of Netsuke
Posted By: Steve Shubinski Wed, Jul 08, 2020 IP: 2600:8802:700:5b9:a0

This is a monkey sitting down. It is made of a stone and it stands 1 1/4" tall. I am hoping someone can tell me roughly the age and the stone that is is made from. Thanks much

Hi,

Nice object. Not entirely sure it's a netsuke?

At any rate, it represents the speak no evil monkey. My guess would be it's some sort of soapstone. They were used quite frequently in China for carving. This feels more like an amateurly carved piece but it could be quite old? Maybe, 19th-20th. It's hard to say for sure.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Thanks again John. I was thinking possibly soap stone as it does have that smooth texture.

It is an unfinished soap stone carvings, a carver could make it really nice.
