Subject:Help translating Chinese Seals (Part I of II)
Posted By: China Doll Thu, May 28, 2020 IP: 2600:1700:b392:4730:

Hi. Here is a tough one for you, Honorable I. Nagy ... I have a pair of large carved soapstone guardian lions with carved seals on the bottom. I realize that the pictures only offer the reverse image of the actual seals and I do apologize for the image quality. I believe the two seals are the same with one being Zhuwen (朱文, lit. "red characters") seals imprint the characters in red ink, sometimes referred to as yang seals; and the other being Baiwen (白文, lit. "white characters") seals imprint the background in red, leaving white characters, sometimes referred to as yin seals. I know that this may be a tough one, but I also have great faith in the Master. Thank you !! ps. I will be submitting a second post (Part II) in which I took a picture of the seal in a mirror to help visualize what the seal would look like on paper.
