Subject:Cylinder Seal (Chinese / Japanese)
Posted By: Ash Mon, May 18, 2020 IP: 89.241.105.62

Experts here:
I have cylinder hardstone/soapstone seal in my collection since last 15 years or so. I forgot for a while being in garage and cleaning it last weekend found it back so thought to check what it is.

Your seal is Chinese. It's probably Soapstone and from the later 20th century. Akin to tourist type wares.

It is Chinese,
Inscriptions,
昌 - Chang - Surname

床前明月光 - Moonlight in front of my bed
疑是地上霜 - Maybe there's frost on the ground
擧頭望明月 - Lift my head and see the bright moon
低頭思故郷 - Lower my head and think of my home

Famous poem, titled "Quiet Night Thought" by the Tang dynasty poet Li Bai (Li Po).

Sorry, but the reading of cylindrical seals are extremely difficult, even from their imprints.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Many thanks -> I. Nagy and Mark for expert views.

It looks very hard for a soapstone to me.

Regards,
Ash
