Subject:Enamelled glass snuff bottle
Posted By: Sally Sun, May 17, 2020 IP: 90.255.53.87

Hi , thanks for all your help so far , it's been very much appreciated.
Here's another snuff bottle, it has a mark on the base which I hope is readable from the photo. It doesn't look like a reign mark but may give a clue as to it's origin. I would think it's no earlier than 20th century but can't be sure.

From the pale hue of the enamels, I'd estimate a circa 1940s (late Republic) to early People's Republic (post-1949)date for this bottle. The apparently handwritten mark reads right to left as 'Old Moon Pavilion' (Gu yue Xuan - 古月軒). Also seen translated as "Old Moon Terrace", this name is associated with a style of porcelains, marked and unmarked, believed to date to the 18th century by some authorities. I've pasted below six links for your info, the first five being comparative auction results for snuff bottles, and the last one containing a short historical perspective on matters 'Guyuexuan'.

Thank you Bill , all very interesting and helpful to have the translation of the mark to open up avenues of research . Some of the prices look a little speculative , I suppose the proof of the pudding is what bidders are prepared to pay in an open auction .
Thanks again , best wishes , Sally
