Subject:Leather covered box with gold painted scenes
Posted By: William Spencer Sat, May 16, 2020 IP: 2601:1c0:6500:46f0:7

Hello,

I am completely in the dark on this. Is it a well worn tourist item or something with age? Any assistance is greatly appreciated!

It is a Chinese Document Box. Early 19th Century in my view. The lockplate at the front and the hinges are original which is rather rare on them. Leather lacquered red and highlighted with pigment and gold leaf. A very nice example

Thank you so much for your help. I had a strong feeling that it was early and special but I have been fooled before with the masterfully crafted Asian export items that were designed to deceive fairly ignorant Westerners like myself. I watch hours of videos and but it seems like every time that I have a handle on the main stream I realize just how ignorant I am.

Cheers!
