Subject:Snuff bottle and box
Posted By: Selim Sat, Mar 28, 2020 IP: 94.235.4.100 This box was put up for sale at an auction online. And I bought this snuff bottle. I started to be interested in the art of the Asia. I ask you for information about this box and snuff bottle. Thank you so much. |

Posted By: Bill H Sun, Mar 29, 2020 The lotus scroll motif on your Chinese snuff bottle appears to be hand-painted, and the fragmentary 'jianding' or export seal has characteristics of those used by the various provincial cultural relics Bureaus during the late 20th century, following the founding of the People's Republic. My subjective experience leans toward a late Republic of China (1912-49) dating, because earlier snuff bottles I've handled tended to have a glazed bottom between the foot-rim, more often than not with an apocryphal reign mark, as in the example shown below with faux Jiaqing mark dated circa 1910. |

Posted By: Mark Adams Mon, Mar 30, 2020 This bottle has been modified/altered from a scent bottle to a snuff bottle. The raised outer tube with the lip/hole has been ground down. |

Posted By: Bill H Tue, Mar 31, 2020 Actually I did have a snuff bottle with concentric foot that was consigned to the back of a shelf, forgotten about because it has damage. In addition to the crack, its glaze appears to have been sanded, indicating it may be a shipwreck piece. The dragon style looks a bit like Guangxu-early Republic. |

Posted By: Bill H Fri, Apr 03, 2020 Giovanni, thanks for the interest, but it isn't that I don't collect snuff bottles, just that they aren't my primary focus. However, I do collect almost anything I can afford in the way of Chinese porcelain with decent dragon decoration, including snuff bottles. Here are a couple of late 19th century bottles in better shape with later caps. I like the unmarked one better than the one with an apocryphal Yongzheng reign mark because the dragon is much better drawn with claws that conform to a more perfect circle. |

Posted By: Selim Wed, Apr 01, 2020 I found two examples with a similar pattern and base. Although the pattern is similar, there is a difference in quality. Maybe mine is a later copy of this. |
