Subject:Inscription on back of buddha sculpture
Posted By: Nina E. Sun, Mar 08, 2020 IP: 93.131.38.204

Hello, we have got a small buddha sculpture with an inscription on its back – we would be very thankful if anyone could help us to translate the inscription, or to get more information about it.
Thanks in advance!

It would be nice to supply us with photographs of the whole figure, front and back. This object is dated and I am sure the date will be posted soon by our expert Nagy.

Thanks a lot for your reply @Gakusei! This is interesting.
I tried to take some better pictures – also some of the whole sculpture – thanks in advance!

Only the first one and half lines can be spelled out, the rest remains more less illegible.
宋景平三年正月十日 Song* (Dynasty) 3rd Year of Jingping, (426) January 10th
張法攷造....... Made by Zhang Fakao......

* Liu Song 劉宋 or Former Song 前宋 Dynasty (420-479) was the first of the four Southern Dynasties

With regards,
I.Nagy

Thank you so much I.Nagy! We really didn't know anything about this sculpture and we didn't expect, that it seems to be that old – so thanks a lot for your efforts!

Best regards!
Nina

I am so glad to find this post. I have been searching the web, and asking questions for a long time. Seem to get different answers to the translation. I have noticed one thing that is the same on both pictures, above the hand (his right hand)there is a indention. But other things that are different. Writing on the back seems different. Could you please give me some help.
