I got this box recently, I was wondering what its origins might be and if it has any value

Agree with Mark. This is an antique style portable shaving stand a.k.a. barber's box. See link for another example.

Respectively, the characters and seal on the back read "Hall (or Studio) of the Eastern Sea" (Dong yang tang - 東洋堂) and "Seal of the Hall of the Eastern Sea" (Dong yang tang yin - 東洋堂印).

I Googled the characters and got no apparent relevant returns, only that this is the name of a printing company in Tokyo that made postcards circa the early 20th century.

thanks for the info.
Using some of the keywords you mentioned I did some looking and found "korean mirror boxes" that have the same type of semicircle bit for the top lock.
also for dating the piece it doesn't have any markings other than the one on the back, no country of origin labels or anything of the sort. would that date it at all? since it was usually required at a certain time period.

also I found some results with the similar top bits. would these allow me to estimate its value at all?
