Subject:Chinese robe for a lady - need opinions on age & quality
Posted By: Bill H Fri, Feb 07, 2020 IP: 2601:342:200:6e70:99

A friend of a friend contacted me recently hoping I could give her some idea of how old and valuable the silk robe pictured below might be. My original thought was that it could be a fairly recent product, but then I found one in the identical pattern sold at auction as Qing that hammered in at US$3250 in 2017.

I don't have any robes but commented on another similar one in the forum back in 2013 (link for copy and paste in browser below). I also have handled enough antique and other Chinese textiles to know the present robe's decorative features were made with some rather typical sewing, couching and embroidery techniques, without any tapestry or 'forbidden' stitchery (kesi). But I'm hoping we have an advanced collector in our midst somewhere who can offer opinions on the age of the garment and quality of workmanship; also where if anywhere the hand-embroidery ends in favor of machine stitching.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,

Bill
