Subject:Is This Chinese Rose Medallion Fake Or Real? If Real How Old?
Posted By: Gary Knudtzon Mon, Jan 27, 2020 IP: 2601:602:681:1290:c8

What seems to be an Early Chinese Rose Medallion Large 9.5 Inch Plate may be a Reproduction? Has Gold Leaf throughout and what I would consider quality fine details. Has a semi Rough back and is not glossy more of a matte finish. If it is Real how old would it be? Thanks Again for your Quality Answers! Gary K

I would definitely say it was real Canton Famille Rose, judging by the quality of painting. As for age, I would suggest late 19th to early 20th century.

Regards,
Tom.

The good quality hand-painted decoration and bottom of the plate (low-beveled foot with countersunk center and modicum of grit around the inner edge)indicates a late-19th century period of manufacture. This isn't "rose medallion", per se, since it lacks a traditional type of medallion in the center. "Rose Canton" would fit it better I think. Below are some pictures of a related pattern from my catalog.

Best regards,

Bill H.
