Subject:Help with stone carving of old man
Posted By: Paul Wilkins Sun, Jan 26, 2020 IP: 2a02:c7d:921f:df00:e

Hello

I would be really grateful if anyone could shed some light on this carving.

Looks like marble or granite and is 12 cm high and weighs 166 gms. Feels heavy for size.

There are 2 holes drilled in bottom so guess it may have been mounted. Still stands on its own on flat base

Many thanks

Paul

Looks like soapstone to me, there are a lot of chinese soapstone carvings about. Although it's difficult to say for certan, I would say that your carving was early to mid 20th century, but others on this forum may be able to give a better idea of age.

Regards,
Tom

Judging by the poor quality pictures I see that this is a soapstone carving.

These soapstone statues can be picked up in any Chinese souvenir shop. Here is one we bought for $40 to take up shelf space in our Asian cabinet.

Cheers,
Stan
